Paul Butler

Paul Butler is a town planning and heritage consultant, now part time, with his office in Manchester but his home in Nailsworth. He worked for Newcastle, Gateshead and Manchester City Councils before setting up his practice in 1992. In his time in the North West he founded the Ancoats Buildings Preservation Trust (ABPT), which was responsible for rescuing St Peter’s Church, now the rehearsal rooms for the Halle, and Murrays Mills, the first urban steam driven mill in the world. He was pleased to discover that his move down south did not mean losing connections with the imposing mills of the early Industrial Revolution. He remains a Trustee of the ABPT’s successor body, Heritage Works. Much of his remaining time is spent with the Institute of Historic Building Conservation, the professional body for conservation practitioners, where he is a Trustee and chairs its membership committee.
