Planning a Visit

Teachers are advised to make a pre-visit to the mills, discussing learning outcomes, risk assessments and the visit timetable. Contact Jane Ford.
A Booking Form can be downloaded or sent electronically. This will provide details for payment and a map of the sites.
For the 2 mills package we will charge £3.00 per child.(One mill £2) For accompanying adults there is no charge. Other activities have varying charges. We are a volunteer organisation and as a charity we welcome any voluntary contributions.
An invoice will be issued when the booking form is received. Payment can be by cheque or BACS. Details will be on the Booking Form.
You can visit either mill separately or both on the same day. For mill visits the class will need to be divided, so that a maximum of 16 children can be accommodated at each site.
Please allow at least 1 hour at each mill.
Ensure that there are sufficient adults to supervise children between sites, which does involve crossing roads. There will always be adequate supervision from our experienced volunteer guides within the sites.
Wear warm clothing, Dunkirk can be chilly even in the summer and suitable footwear (trainers) for walking the cycle path.

Car parking
At Dunkirk there is only Disabled Parking ( the rest being for residents only). At Gigg there is some parking available.
Contact Stagecoach for numbers and times.
For Dunkirk, coaches should use the bus stops on the A46 just outside the Mill. At Gigg, coaches can pull off the road. Coaches may park at Nailswoth Bus Station.
At Dunkirk there are 2 unisex toilets (one is suitable for disabled use). There are no toilets at Gigg.
Lunch Break
We can arrange somewhere nearby where packed lunches can be eaten.
First Aid
Each site carries a first aid box.
Dunkirk is fully accessible from the road. There are steps down from the cycle path. Dunkirk and Gigg are approx.1.5 km apart. Gigg Mill is approached from a narrow footpath and the dye plant garden which has 2 railway sleeper steps.
Risk Assessment
We can provide a risk assessment if required or schools may prefer to do their own.
